Carolyn’s boat career began in her home waters of the Chesapeake Bay on the old Maryland Dove of Historic St. Mary’s City. She spent three summers there as a docent and shipwright’s apprentice, learning how to sail and maintain the ship. From there, she spent five years crewing aboard tall ships, including Pride of Baltimore II and the Arctic Schooner Bowdoin. In 2019 she stepped away from sailing to pursue her interests in shipbuilding and repair, adding to her time as a shipwright’s apprentice as well as attending the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Townsend WA. After returning to the east coast, she worked as a shipwright, sailing mate and advocate for equity and inclusivity awareness in the tall ship community. Aboard Tyrone, she is excited to bring together her work in advocacy and sail training with her shipwright skills to care for and operate such a classic wooden boat.
