Tyrone offers a back to basics sail training platform for all ages and experience levels. Come with us to experience the water and islands of Maine aboard a classic wooden schooner. A typical 4 day trip will begin with a general familiarization of the boat, safety equipment / procedures and voyage planning. Once underway, the diverse experience of her crew, the demands of the vessel and that of the Maine Coast offer unique opportunities for learning and adventure.

When you’re aboard Tyrone you are an integral part of her crew. You will take part in voyage planning, galley work, sailing of the vessel, steering, navigation, marlinespike skills and overall safety throughout the trip. Each aspect of running the vessel presents unique opportunities for learning with both planned curriculum and in the moment experiences. Experienced sailors are just as welcome as complete novices aboard Tyrone, where a unique and valuable experience can be had by all.

General topics covered include but are not limited to safety, navigation, passage planning for coastal cruising, sailing, boat handling, steering underway, anchoring, seamanship, rules of the road, vessel maintenance, systems. We also take time to enjoy the beauty the Maine Coast has to offer, often going ashore at anchorages to explore islands, beholding the beauty of the night sky and experiencing the wide variety of wildlife.

Here is some general info on what to bring; please don’t hesitate to ask questions or verify anything prior to your trip.

What to Bring:

  • A good attitude and openness to learn and share experiences- Being on the water on a small wooden boat with up to 7 other people can be a humbling and public place. You are an important part of ensuring everyone’s time aboard is valuable and enjoyable.

  • Clothing - Don’t forget warm clothes, even in the summer months it can be quite cool on the water in Maine . Basic foul weather gear is recommended though we do carry some spares aboard, boots (helpful for going ashore as well), rain jacket, rain pants. Swimsuit if you’d like to brave the cold water. Sandals should be captured-heel, flip-flops are not functional as deck shoes. Hats and sunglasses are recommended to reduce heat and sun damage.

  • Bedding - We recommend you bring a sleeping bag and pillow if it is available to you. If not, Tyrone can offer basic bedding.

  • Toiletries - Tyrone does have fresh water capabilities for shower and sink. To preserve water the crew generally opts for saltwater showers or dips in the ocean but we do allot enough fresh water for 1-2 showers per person per trip. Please bring your own towel.

  • Necessities and Medications- Please bring spares of glasses, contacts or hearing aids if you have them. The same goes for any medications you may require. Tyrone will have some seasickness preventions, but please bring some if you have a type you like. For safety reasons, glasses/contacts or hearing aids are required aboard if they are a part of your daily life.

  • General Items and Safety Equipment - Bring a headlamp if you’ve got one, they are invaluable for life underway. We carry most necessary safety equipment on the vessel including first aid items, inflatable PFDs and harnesses however, if you have your own please do feel free to bring anything you are more comfortable using. A fixed blade or folding knife and marlinspike can be helpful aboard for maintenance or marlinspike work. Some find it helpful to bring a notebook and writing utensil for navigation and record keeping, as we are often in and out of cellular service range.

  • Snacks and Alcohol - We stock the boat for all meals and general snacks however, please do feel welcome to bring snacks or food items you desire within reason (storage is limited). For adult trips, alcohol can be brought aboard BYOB and consumed; however we have strict rules prohibiting consumption during passages and limiting drinking to time at anchorage, dockside, etc. Overconsumption of alcohol at anytime will be prohibited.

What not to Bring:

  • Drugs of any kind.

  • Don’t overpack. Space is limited on the vessel, and in our experience you won’t use half the stuff (clothes including) you might be tempted to bring. Duffel bags or backpacks are best, it can be difficult to stow rigid luggage. If you have questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

  • Weapons other than a rigging knife.
